This Week at the Farmers Market

5th June 2021

Hi there

Times like these with the extraordinary rain up in Canterbury this week should make us realize how reliant we really should be supporting local business, by buying from the growers & the farmers close to home in our own region.  Wishing our Cantabrian friends & family a fast recovery in the coming weeks & months.

The weekend brings another long weekend with Queen’s Birthday, so bring your family, friends or visitors to town to the Market.  Arbor Day also falls on Saturday this year so go plant a tree!  Or volunteer at any of your local planting days.

18 years at the Otago Farmers Market, Wes Reichel from Te Mahanga Orchard is retiring from the Market this weekend.  He has been setting up in the carpark since month two of the market’s inception, one of our early Market pioneers!  We all wish him the best in easing into a graduated form of retirement, in the meantime he’ll still be selling his garlic on mail order.  He is the 3rd generation to have worked the land trialling so many new & exciting varieties of fruit over the years.  Truly the end of an era. Wes, from all of us at the Otago Farmers Market Trust, the staff, fellow vendors & customers we sure are all going to miss your gentle charm, Wes’s Famous Garlic & your terrific fruit, produce & your friendly team.

My advice to Wes's many customers will be to stock up this weekend while we can & come by to say goodbye.

Shop your way around Otago this weekend…. at the Market!

See you Saturday….

Dunford Grove:

Well, here it is! The culmination of our year, fresh oil flowing from the press.  I’ll have all your infused favourites this Saturday plus a few litres on this season’s Olivio Nuovo, bring along one of our bottles (clean & dry) for this delight.

Did you know?

That gorgeous green of fresh off the press oil is not a factor in oil judging.  We use blue glassware when assessing oil in competitions as colour should not influence the scoring.

NZ Nuts This Weekend

Greetings – and a quick update.  We are now out of chestnuts until next season.... and we are getting low on stocks of Hartley, G26 and Franquette walnuts, so customers who have developed a taste for these cultivars might want to “squirrel” some aside for the future.  I also now have the smaller grade Franquette and Vina walnuts sorted – these are on special at $10/kg.  So, for in shell walnuts, halves and pieces and almonds call into the stall with the yellow canopy, third stall on the right, just inside the main entrance to the market.

Have a great week.  Valda
