Hi there
How are you all going? Autumn has quietly turned up here amongst a week of disquiet & disruptions here & abroad. Hopefully we will see you this weekend if you are up & about. Looks like we are finally getting a Sunny Saturday after at least the last 3x Markets having to wear a raincoat, not a big deal in the big picture I know, but it will make your shop a more pleasant experience & we can all do with that right now. You will find our Market stalls bursting with variety & colour right now as autumn crops kick in. Heck, Rosedale Orchard even had pumpkins making an appearance last week (& at $4.50 each that’s a cheap big pot of soup waiting for someone to cook up!). Earnscleugh Orchard have the most gorgeous, elegant baby Honey Pears, I’m planning on poaching & bottling some of these whole this week. I saw cox orange apples last weekend & plums galore! Strawberries were still around last weekend & lots of berries of all varieties for that matter. If Nigel at Oamaru Organics has kamo kamo this week again then I’m grabbing one or two, they just mop up all the flavours of whatever you cook it with, and are so sweet, add a good glug of Sandy’s Dunford Grove extra virgin olive oil with it & some carraway seeds & it’s a lovely comforting meal. Another little flavour hit to add to your dishes is the Oyster Mushroom Ketchup at Stonehurst up on the platform (I’ve added it to salads & dishes this week & it gives any savoury dish a fresh zing). Hmm, what else? Well, there are still so many gorgeous flowers around right now & a nice thing to drop off (with some stone fruit which I’m sure will be appreciated) to someone isolating at home this week. And check out Ronia & Pippi’s fig & coffee almond mylk (my weekly Market fix) & their new mango turmeric, amazing!!! The flavour combo's Anika & Petra come up with are very clever.
It’s great to have good premium big cuts of fresh local lamb again at the Market – Dave at Princes St Butchery is collaborating with Catlin’s Coast Premium Meats to bring lamb to our customers. There is full traceability back to the farm in Owaka & I know Dave is excited to have this quality of meat to work with at the butchery for all your favourite cuts of fresh lamb. It’s always good to meet the farmers & Carey & Tracey were at the Market last weekend.
I'd just like to formally welcome back Richard from Whitestone Cheese even though he has settled back a month or few back, it's good to have his colourful personality up there to match Henry's! Wishing Henry all the best in his new job, we will miss his cheek & I know he was alway popular with many customers & vendors. Richard has a great knowledge of his products & what to match what with!
Please stay home if you are unwell or are a positive case. Please wear your masks (unless exempt). Please keep your distance.
Food & beverages are to be taken OUT of the Market to be consumed, as masks should be kept ON at all times. Do your shop & then grab a coffee & brunch on the way out to takeaway. Shop & go will also avoid any queuing & keep distancing safer in our outdoor Market so everyone can shop easily.
Remember, that only all our authenticated, verified Otago Farmers Market vendors are all within our gates, who have our tick of approval. Make sure you support them inside the Market carpark & platform & you will get a quality product while you all respect 1mt distancing between each other & Market stalls.
Bring CASH as some of our vendors are cash only.
Remember your keep cup, return jars & containers to keep the ReUse cycle loop working.
Shop your way around Otago this weekend…. at the Market! Take care of each other & thanks for supporting local where you can.
Ngā mihi

This Week in the kitchen
I have been getting menu inspiration from all the great recipes in our website archives this week and have found these lamb and zucchini skewers, which are the perfect thing to quickly whip up in the kitchen. The fennel and potato salad makes a great addition to this meal, using fennel from Oamaru Organics or Ettrick Gardens. I will definitely be picking up the key ingredients for my night cooking at home this week. I have loved having a look around the markets and getting to know everyone, and can't wait to stock up this weekend! Bella

Wild mushroom season is here!
Dried mushrooms are a great store cupboard ingredient - perfect for risotto or pasta dishes, adding to warming soups & casseroles, meatloaves and even pizza toppings!
Where wild mushrooms add an earthy depth to dishes and sauces the oyster mushrooms tend to have a lighter taste (also well suited as a substitute for button mushrooms in recipes).

Whitestone Cheese
|
Changing faces at the Whitestone stall. Everyone will notice the older version of Henry at the Market. A note to inform all that Henry has now moved to take up a chef position in Wanaka. Henry has run and improved the stall since taking it over in 2014. We will endeavour to bring him back from time to time to run the market if he is available. I will endeavour to maintain the high standards that Henry achieved. I am sure many will wish Henry well and all will miss his cheerful disposition and willingness to please. His technical knowledge Is very helpful that he gathered as an employee of Whitestone Cheese Co. I ran restaurants and catered from 1993 through 2008. I have worked with. Whitestone Cheese during those days, and came to the market in 2009 and left for overseas in 2014, I have returned to carry on the stall. Traveling extensively and sampling many foreign cheeses, I appreciate what a great product Whitestone produces. It is my aim to bring our product range to you and following the end of Covid restrictions an opportunity to try before you buy. Thank you for your support and it has been fun reconnecting with old and new customers since my return. Richard

Kimchi is very popular, our regular recipe made of organic green cabbage has 3 different spice levels (mild, medium, and hot). We also have seasonal kimchi which is medium with a mix of seasonal vegetables from the farmer's market and/or our garden. This one has more texture and more depth as I put some other spices on it. See you at the market. Marie
