This Week at the Farmers Market

5th November 2022

Hi there

ReUse Poster .jpg

Lovely to see so many international cruise-ship customers as well as our regular goers enjoying the Market on the weekend, on what was another sunny day.

My Farm Fresh Asparagus is proving very popular with you all.  I’ve enjoyed grabbing a spear from a cup of water in the fridge when I feel like a raw vege snack – no need to snap the ends I find, and they last well through the week + great when you can’t be bothered cooking. There is a bucket under Dave’s table at his stall for you to return rubber bands & the bamboo tags for reuse.  Dave & his granddaughter Indi are enjoying meeting everyone & it makes the trip down worthwhile.  If you want to add a touch of decadence, then Debs at Catlins Kitchen makes a great handmade aioli and a range of mayo’s all made with local ingredients, which marry perfectly with asparagus.  Was good to see the early hit of paeonies at the Market last week from Rodger at Janefield’s, should see more in the coming weeks as he only had a small amount at the crack of dawn last Saturday (as he had the first export consignment last week).  He promises more volumes of strawberries & paeonies as the season kicks in.  Stock up on your nuts for summer from NZ Nuts – your last chance for the year at the Market.  Tim (Valda’s son) will be in the same spot beside Ettrick’s

The Otago Farmers Market is listed in the widely read Australian ‘Broadsheet’ magazine ‘Guide to New Zealand’s Best Farmers Markets’ this month – you can see the link on our Facebook page.

For those of you who maybe isolating or homebound we have a few vendors that can deliver to your door during the weekBrightside Microgreens, Gilberts Fine Foods, Ettrick Gardens, Waewae, Ronia & Pippi, Agreeable Nature Eggs, Blue Mountain Butchery, Tartan Sari, Dunford Grove, Evansdale Cheese, Oamaru Organics, Port Larder, Harbour Fish, Havoc Pork, Blueskin Bay Honey, Wild Dispensary, Judge Rock Wines, Hazelnut Estate, Matheson & Roberts, Bennies Honey, Whitestone Cheese, NZ Nuts, Breads & More, Dunedin Craft Distillery, Princes St Butchery & others.  You can find their details in our ORDER NOW button on our website www.otagofarmersmarket.org.nz

Bring CASH as some of our vendors are cash only. Remember your keep cup / mug (if you forget, check with your beverage vendor if they have spares to borrow to save on a single use throw out cups – which are just not cool!), we will keep supplying them with cups where needed, it’s up to us all to make use of this.  And remember your containers, produce bags, etc look for the ReUse posters on vendors stalls that accept packaging back (see poster here) if not, ask them why not.  Most of our vendors can reuse most packaging.

Remember, that only all our authenticated, verified Otago Farmers Market vendors are all within our gates who have our tick of approval.  Make sure you support them inside the Market carpark & platform & you will get a quality product.

Take care out there, I have finally (after 2.5yrs of not having ANY sickness at all since pre Covid days) succumbed to a lurgy this week (not positive) but a horrid cold of sorts, hence this is written from my bed (after 24hrs away in Christchurch for the weekend).  I had forgotten how horrid getting sick was, argh.  Feeling for those of you who I know are recovering or in the midst of anything right now.  Chef Amy & Isabella will be looking after the Market this weekend.

Please respect everyone’s space & feel free to wear your mask.

Shop your way around Otago this weekend…. at the Market!

Wishing you well.

The market is back in full swing, and the extra visitors around town are creating buzz, this was especially evident at last weekends market. Stonehurst Gourmet - Herb of the Week

stonehurst.png

LOVAGE (Levisticum officinale)

Also known as the "Maggi Herb" due to its celery-yeasty-like aroma being similar to the seasoning of that name!

A hardy perennial of deeply cut, shiny green leaves and hollow stems, of which all parts are edible-

Seeds: can be added to cordials/liqueurs, crushed and added to breads, pastries & salads. Leaves: can be added to soups and casseroles or salads (top tip - rub a leaf around a salad bowl!). Drink tea for a savory taste. Stem/stalks: add to casseroles and soups. Steam and serve with a white sauce. Tender finely chopped young shoots can be added to salads. Root: peel then cook or pickle.

Medicinally: create an infusion (from any part of the plant) to help with water retention, assist in removal of waste products and to aid rheumatism.

NB: Infusion NOT to be taken during pregnancy or for those with kidney problems.

Full sun - part shade. Organically rich, moist soil. Flower stalks up to 2m.
