This Week at the Farmers Market

6th November 2021

Hi there

I can’t quite believe it’s November already, and we are staring down the barrel of Christmas carols being everywhere! On the bright side, there is a lot more brightness, sun wise…

I feasted on Oamaru Organic’s new jersey benne potatoes this week, and in fear of sounding pretentious, I’ve not eaten such delicious potatoes since going to a French restaurant in Berlin (yea I know…eyeroll) and I have both Irish & German friends. They know their fiddley dee potatoes. But in all honesty, I never knew how on earth they made these simple boiled potatoes so smooth and tasty, turns out it's quality and freshness!

Speaking of staple veges, Monday the 1st of November was World Vegan Day & November is also considered World Vegan Month. Even if you are looking at it from a sustainability, health, or ecological perspective, it makes a lot of sense to learn how to eat more vegan meals, at the very least! It's certainly made a lot easier with all of the amazing produce our vendors have available… It’s also worth noting how many of our vendors provide Vegan options, Run Rabbit Ltd. has vegan pasta, all of Marie’s products & ready to eats are vegan. Tartan Sari, Port Larder, Slice of Heaven, La Crepe (who are taking a wee break) have vegan options & goods, to name a few. You’d be hard pressed (*sorry, not sorry, about the pun) not to include Dunford Grove’s olive oil or Jia He’s tofu in your vegan recipes either. And that’s not even including all our amazing vegetable vendors!

The same protocols are in place this week, mask wearing (unless you have an exemption or for children), scanning in & keeping the 2mt distancing.  Please use the MAIN MIDDLE GATE on Anzac Ave & depart from there as well (all other gates are blocked off).  If you are parking in the north carpark, please walk around to the main front gate, this is so we can track numbers.  There should be an easy flow in again this week.

We ask if you could please take coffee & food off site to eat from our many ready to eat vendors that way we can keep the flow happening for everyone quickly into the Market to shop.

We look forward to seeing you all this weekend!  Bring your cash, bags, keep cup or mug, containers, mask & charged phone for scanning.

Shop your way around Otago this weekend…. at the Market!

This Week in the kitchen

So here's some pretty tasty and easy sounding Vegan recipes using produce from our amazing vendors. Whether you are vegan or not, or just dabbling, they sound great and I'm going to give them a whirl this weekend for sure! If I can find a way to justify to my guilty conscious, that eating chocolate tart is fine because it's got tofu in it, I am all for it. Kristina

Dunford Grove

This valley is amazing!  Plant it, water it and away they go.  Our turn for the grand kids this Christmas so these will be perfect by then, that’s if Jacinda lets them out of Auckland?

Did you know?

There are two main parts of an olive plant that benefit heart health? Many people know Extra Virgin Olive Oil, from the olive fruit, is great for your heart, however did you know the olive leaf also contains heart-healthy polyphenols such as Oleuropein? We consider the olive leaf as the secret ancient ingredient from the olive tree.

The curry pumpkin sauce for the tempeh burger is a winner, we had lots of good feedback from it. Last week, everyone was excited to try some fresh tempeh made with NZ spray free soybeans, quinoa and black sesame seeds, it was so delicious! We also have 2 new low sugar gourmet jam combination: Blueberry and apple jam & raspberry, quince and plum.
