It's Plastic Free July, lets get to it!

7th July 2018

Hi there

Plastic free July is upon us and we here at the market are working towards reducing even more waste from the market. It requires commitment from all parties involved including you, the customer.

Three years ago the OFMT created a waste minimisation policy. The roll out of this has been successful in that we compost all compostable waste left at the market, make produce bags from recycled fabric that we sell at the office for a nominal amount, make tshirt bags for customers to borrow should they be short of bags, use a coffee cup library to reduce single use coffee cup usage and actively encourage vendors to reduce plastic. We redistribute, recycled  soft plastic bags that the public drop off to us and sell shopping bags, up to 2,000 a year.

All new vendors to the market have to use sustainable packaging – it is one of the criteria’s that the trust has it in its decision making matrix when reviewing new applications to trade.

We are currently working with vendors to limit severely the use of single use singlet bags. The fish, poultry and meat vendors are actively thinking of substitutes that could be used for their products that avoid cross contamination with other items sold at the market. Stone fruit is another area that doesn’t have an easy fix.

Basically the ideal is for customers to bring their own bags, cups, containers for fish, cheese etc. We can only do this if we are all in it together. Also talk to vendors about their packaging choices and offer suggestions if you have them.

This week we welcome Taste Nature to the market. They will be selling preserved fruits and vegetables, sauces and dressings, vegan takeaway food, including soup, broths and bread. Everything is made in their kitchen, with mostly organic and local ingredients. Be sure to pop by and welcome them to the market. They will be situated between Kapowai and The Crooked Spaghetti Co in the lower market.

See you then

This Week in the kitchen

When things are cold outside we can either scurry to the computer and order flights to the nearest tropical island or, take a dish from the equator give it a seasonal twist and get cooking!

This week Kate has a delightful variation on the humble Quesadilla with her Pumpkin Quesadilla’s with lime and jalapeno sour cream. So, get cooking!

Did you know?

Scientists have isolated the unique molecule that provides extra virgin olive oil with its multitude of health and life-extending benefits. Known as

Oleuropein the olive tree produces this in abundance in both leaves and fruit.

Well Eevee has decided she quite likes olive leaf too.  Now if we could just get her to climb a ladder she could help out with the pruning!
