This Week at the Farmers Market

Hi there

It’s May, the school holidays are over, Mother’s Day on Sunday, it’s a belated Graduation Weekend, Duck Shooting Season opens (for those so inclined), and a sunny day forecast on Saturday - so much to celebrate this week!  I’m looking forward to finally getting to see my niece graduate after it was cancelled last year. Welcome to all the families in town, we have plenty of coffee & brunch pre the parade & we are just a 5 min walk away.

There is lots of brunch options to dine in (outside) & some of our vendors have samples for you to try before you buy.

For those of you who are stuck at home we have a few vendors that can deliver to your door during the weekBrightside Microgreens, Gilberts Fine Foods, Ettrick Gardens, Waewae, Ronia & Pippi, Agreeable Nature Eggs, Blue Mountain Butchery, Tartan Sari, Dunford Grove, Evansdale Cheese, Oamaru Organics, Harbour Fish, Havoc Pork, Blueskin Bay Honey, Wild Dispensary, Judge Rock Wines, Hazelnut Estate, Matheson & Roberts, Whitestone Cheese, Breads & More, Dunedin Craft Distillery, Princes St Butchery & others.  All their contact details you can find on our website under vendors.

We encourage mask use & respecting everyone’s space within the Market.

This Week in the kitchen

With mothers day on the horizon I searched the market kitchen archives for a recipe that is great to share with Mum. With the weather getting colder I have also been looking at a variety of soups and came across a cream of Jerusalem Artichoke Soup. While you are picking up the fresh ingredients for these dishes, make sure you don't forget to pick up some flowers for your mum!  Isabella (Assistant Manager)

Well, here’s a happy coincidence, nut harvest and school holidays. We did make a mistake with the reward system, the biggest bag of nuts wins, that just meant that the boys spent more time-pinching nuts from other bags than picking them up!

First Saturday of the month this week so I’ll see you up on the platform Saturday.

NOW;  fancy being part of an Olive harvest? Central Otago Olive Growers is having another Community Pressing day next Saturday 14th, from 10 till 2. It was a great day last year with lots of people picking and every group comes away with a bottle of oil straight off the press- Olio Nuovo! Ask me for details or check COOG out on Facebook.

Did you know?  New Zealand has a little over 300 olive groves growing 350,000 trees over a total of about 2,130 hectares. The largest grower boasts 40,000 trees while over 70% of groves are less than 1,000 trees.

This country consumes over 4.5 million litres of olive oil a year and not all of it is extra virgin, local producers account for about 12% of this total and practically all of it is Extra Virgin Olive Oil!  Sandy

Pruning the fruit trees has been quite pleasant on "Willowbrook Orchard" for John and Jack (who took this photo) this week with plenty of sunshine 🌞 from mid-morning until sundown at 4-30pm.  Evenings are quite a bit cooler but what wonderful Autumn /winter fruits we have in Apples and Pears to fill the kitchen and add flavour & vitamins to meals 🍎🍏 🍴🍵

For the first course of meals, Chopped Apples are a particularly great addition to stir-fried vegetables. They bring a surge of sweetness and flavour. Make enough to have leftovers for another meal.
I like to add a little grate of cheese and use it on toast for, under the grill, a poached egg on top looks pretty good. Other fav ideas with the same leftover are to fill a wrap, toasted sandwich, or added scrambled eggs. Also good to beat in 1-2 eggs and a little flour to make a Vege / Apple patties (a pinch of curry is nice to add in too when making patties like this).

An easy Apple dessert has got to be Baked Apple. Wash apple and take the core out, fill the cavity with dates or other dried fruit (raisins etc.) prick apples with a fork, stand in the baking dish - melt a little honey over each apple (a pinch of cinnamon or similar) bake medium over about 40 mins- serve as is or with custard, Ice cream or cream . . Looks good and tastes good 🍎🍏✨There's more to an Apple than slicing and eating fresh or cooking Pies 😊✨ John will be at Market this weekend with plenty of varieties of Apples to choose from and juicy pears too 🚛🍏✨Enjoy 🌷. Diana Gilchrist (Willowbrook Orchard)
