This Week at the Market - Market News and Updates

7th November 2019

Hi there

23316765_792903377548193_7735493180002628189_n.jpg

November strides on and with it more seasonal vendors appearing at the market. This week we have Palmerston Asparagus back and who hasn’t been waiting for that to happen!  I think we are probably all hanging out for seasonal, spring delights to tantalise and enliven our taste buds.

Of course now that we are hearing how many sleeps it is to Christmas life seems to speed up and become a little manic. We are having an extra market this year so circle Tuesday 24th December in your diary. It will kick off at 6.30am so those of us still working can get in before work and it will finish at 10.30am so vendors and staff can get home and start to relax into Christmas eve.

If you have started thinking about Christmas presents or need to get gifts posted early consider our gorgeous market tea towels, beeswax wraps, keep cups, produce bags or shopping bags. All of these make excellent gift options and are light and easy to mail if required. Our produce bags make excellent Christmas  stockings  to stuff full of whatever takes your fancy! We also sell market vouchers – these are redeemable anywhere in the market and vendors will give change on them which means you don’t have to spend the whole voucher at one stall if you don’t want to. These are ideal for the person who has everything!

See you Saturday

This Week in the kitchen

The Market Kitchen will be humming this Saturday with many delectable goodies to taste from our array of market vendors which Jamalia will whip up for us.  The menu highlights lighter summer dishes for those longer days, always with a healthier but flavoursome hit in mind.  She also has a monthly article & recipes in the 'Fresh' column in the ODT or you can follow her on Facebook or Instagram as jamaliarose.

Jacob's Dream

Jacobs Dream.jpg

Jacob's Dream now offers the same wonderful products in Glass Jars.  This is for customers who can return the empty jars to the stall in order to be reused.  Miri is also more than happy to take your own jar.

She will take your order, sterilise the jar and have it filled up with your choice of hummus or falafel the following week (or when you want it ready).  You can customise the size if you wish too :)

This is the chance to thank the caring customers who helped Miri come to this idea and bring it into practice. It's been on Miri's mind for a very long time but it was the wonderful advice and donations of jars that made it work out.

Don't be shy to talk to the vendors and share your thoughts. It makes a difference!!

Otago Organics

Salad with Edible Flowers and Vinaigrette.jpg

Our signature salad bags with edible flowers have proved very popular so far this spring. Remember we are happy to fill your own container, with or without flowers.

We now have enough edible flowers to offer small quantities of edible flowers separately.  These are popular for cake and other decorative uses, especially at Christmas time. However, these need to be ordered before the market preferably by Thursday or at the previous week’s market to give us time to pick them for you.  Pick up a card from us if you want to keep our contact details on hand.

We also provide compost Tiger Worms that need to be ordered in a similar way and are also happy for you to pre-order other items such as salads, sorrel, herbs, artichokes etc. This may be useful leading up to Christmas if you are planning something special. Real Christmas trees can also be ordered from us.

Debs at the Catlins Kitchen up on the platform is doing a NEW pastry straw this weekend (homemade puff pastry from scratch of course) - cheddar and red onion to go with our other ones: blue cheese/ cheddar, herbs and garlic/ cheddar and caraway seeds.  They also have potato (with sea salt and black pepper), beetroot, parsnip and carrot chips/crisps.  I also know that some lucky folks who get to stay at the rustic eco escape on their little hamlet in the beautiful Catlins can get to see how they create their goodies & of course get to try everything!  It really is a true taste of the Catlins!

Back from the birthday celebrations so we'll be at the Market this weekend.  Remember to bring your refill bottles.

Why not try this?  Wine and olive matching!  Generally, green olives go better with white and darker olives with red wine.  Add some cheese and you have a great pre-dinner experience

Did you know?  An olive is a great way to cleanse the palate after red wine.
