Hi there
I have had a wonderful week away exploring the mighty West Coast and tramping part of the new Paparoa Great Walk. I am going to go back and mountain bike the whole trail in the new year. It is spectacular and when the Pkye River Memorial track that comes off this great walk is open it will really be another jewel in our wonderful national parks and great walks crown.
I do miss the market when I am away, especially all the wonderful fresh produce. It is wonderful to see new produce coming in and I am sure many of you would have feasted on Jersey Benne potatoes and fresh asparagus through the week.
Esther Bosshard is the talented young woman behind In the Company of Flowers and the gorgeous bouquets of old fashioned and heritage blooms that she grows on urban plots dotted around the city. She supplements what she grows with foraged beauties and brings her artistic eye to create harmony and interest within her bouquets.
Esther is a graduate from the Dunedin School of Art. After graduating she spent a couple of years working before reading Erin Benzakein’s wonderful book, Floret Farm which inspired her and gave her confidence to begin her urban flower growing venture.
She has adopted Curtis Stone’s model of urban farming whereby people with unwanted lawns or disused vegetable gardens allow others without land to use it productively. She has found people to be exceptionally generous and she currently has 4 plots that she actively gardens.
Esther grew up with family that had gardens and she is accustomed to fresh flowers and vegetables in her life. However it has still been a steep learning curve with lots of trial and error and tons of really hard work. Not only has she had to learn about what plants will grow well, but she also needed to acquaint her self with floristry techniques and how to condition cut flowers so that they last well in the vase.
Esther is also a painter. Her two worlds obviously dovetail but it is the farmers market where she gets a sense of connection. She loves the exposure it offers her and has many repeat customers. Esther has a stunning website and will happily undertake wedding flowers or flowers for other special occasions.
Esther spends Friday at first light picking flowers and foliage and then creates her bouquets later that day. You will find Esther at the northern end of the carpark beside Cardrona Merino. Go check her out!
See you Saturday.

Wednesday 23rd December, 6.30am - 11am (customers will be restricted access until 6.30am when all vendors will be in place)
Wednesday 30th December, 8am - 11am
Saturday 9th January 2021, usual time 8am - 12.30pm
NB: NO Saturday markets on 26th December 2020 or 2nd January 2021

Apologies, I haven't talked to you for the last few weeks, been away a bit with my "day" job!
The last step in our pruning is picking up and cutting up the fire wood, this is about half of it. All sorted for next winter, just need to find the staff to light the fire of a morning?
Did you know:
Fewer than 24 hours between harvesting and processing produces the highest grade Extra Virgin Olive Oil, ideally less time. Our processor is just over the road from us so we get picked and processed in under 6 hours.

Locavore Boxes to your Door!
|
If Saturday morning is already crowded with work, or sport and music for the kids, or just sleeping in and reading the newspaper over a leisurely breakfast, you can still support local growers and producers.
Locavore Boxes gather together locally grown herbs, vegetables and fruit, locally produced eggs, honey and dairy produce, as well as other treats, and they deliver them to your door in a truly sustainable wooden or woven box that you simply return to Locavore Boxes next time they call.
Locavore Boxes work with Farmers Market stalwarts Oamaru Organics, Janefield Hydroponics, Holy Cow, Wairuna Organics, Caithness Farm, Kapowai Kombucha as well as other local growers Mihiwaka Organics, BL beekeeping and others.
Check out their website for more information: www.locavoreboxes.co.nz
