This Week at the Market

9th April 2020

Hi there

BC6067A8-1334-40C1-A531-B1D0FC2B180A (1).jpeg

With all of us on a staycation this Easter there will be no hippity hopping off to cribs and baches. Rather we will be in our bubbles giving us an ideal opportunity to cook together, laugh together and play together. The weather is promising to come to the party, at least for the first couple of days, and we will all be trying to make the long weekend an eggstra - special one.

Day light savings kicked in last weekend giving us a reminder that the days are getting shorter and the evenings’ cooler.  The air smells differently and I even foraged my first mushrooms a few days ago. It is a great time of year to be exploring our immediate neighbourhoods because nature really turns it on as the seasons change. We are also incredibly fortunate to live in such a beautiful part of the world.

So let’s count our blessings this Easter as we stay at home, enjoying those we are with and relishing the gloriousness of this time of year and the magic of our environment.

Take care

Kate

This Week in the kitchen

We may not be in our market kitchen caravan but we are thinking of you in your kitchen at home.  Hopefully you are getting some time to get into baking & home cooking.  Jamalia has some ideas for you here in case you do have some chilli's in the garden or stockpiled from your last shop at the market.  The best ones are those big ones.  If you don't have brie then any cheese you can find in the fridge will be fine.  And if you happen to still have plums at home then she has a deliciously rustic stuffed plum recipe to try for pudding (or for breakfast with yoghurt, why the heck not!).

classy bread.jpg

Thanks to recent clarification from the Prime Minister, Gilbert’s Fine Food are now offering online ordering and home delivery for a limited range of our products. Take a look at our website https://gilbertsfinefood.co.nz/products/. While we’d love to be able to offer pies and pastries and all the other goodies, we’re keeping things simple for now, and have most of our breads, a range of gluten free, and flour and yeast available.

We can deliver as far afield as Port Chalmers, Portobello and Mosgiel, and pretty much anywhere in between.

Courier delivery $10 around Dunedin; $15 for further out (Ravensbourne Port Chalmers / Macandrew Bay Portobello / Mosgiel).

We are MPI approved as an essential business and operate in accordance with all Covid-19 Level 4 Lockdown regulations.

Thank you all for your support before, during and after Lockdown – see you soon.

Wild Dispensary can now do online deliveries again.

Check out their website here to order: www.wilddispensary.co.nz.

Use the code: KEEPITLOCAL for FREE local delivery in the wider Dunedin area only please.

They also won an award last week - 'The Best of Natural Awards' - (put together by Healthpost and Good Magazine) in the Digestion category for their Liver Bitters. They are pretty chuffed to receive recognition for their local and wild take on a traditional bitter tonic.

From the Judges: “An amazing combination of ingredients for a nice-tasting bitter product. We love the wild-crafted herbs that are used by Wild Dispensary, and the mindful approach to its formulation. Excellent traditional tonic!”

With Dunedin grown globe artichoke and calendula, wild harvested manuka leaf as well as cardamom and orange peel this digestive bitters is a synergy of carefully selected organic herbs for your digestion, liver and hormonal support. Ideal for incorporating into your daily lifestyle for good health and digestion…especially after all this home baking!

Congrat's Wild Dispensary!

Another Wee Ditty from Toby - Catlins True Brew

Market Matters

"A wee ditty about the loudly, proudly beating heart of our oh so pretty city.

The bustling throng sauntering along to the rolling strolling soundtrack as a busker hums, strums and sings their song.

That friendly familiar face offering, profferring only the finest foodie fayre made with love and care to share in a one stop shop, a truly hallowed place.

Come for a natter or just revel in the cheery chatter as we meet, greet and eat whatever the weather because for once it doesn't even matter.

Feast your eyes...on the fruit, veggies, flowers and pies...a treasure trove, Dunner's own orchard grove through which we loyally, royally rove.

For a while we will all mourn after dawn on a Saturday morn...it's not fair that we are not there for our much loved victual ritual in our locavore lair.

But we will meet again for our tootle, rootle and pootle through the epicurean sights and delights...we may not know when but we will never ever forget where."

Non contact drop off at the courier depot.  A big thank you to all who've ordered on line, it's a pity I can't put a face to these dispatches; maybe when we get through this we should start introducing ourselves!  Remember, if you'd like some of our deliciousness, see the Products page at www.dunfordgrove.com
Did you know?
Ancient Romans used branches of Hazel Nut trees as torches at wedding ceremonies with the belief that the humble Hazel Nut ensures a long, happy and prosperous marriage.  Must say I'm enjoying this time with my beloved and this is surely helped by the nuts!
