Hi there
How is everyone doing this week? Hopefully there are good moments amongst it all.
Autumn is well & truly kicking in now that daylight savings has finished & we can hunker down when we need too, feels like soup weather! Oamaru Organics have lovely leeks right now & you will find pumpkins at Rosedale Orchard. Ettrick Gardens won’t be there this week but there will still be plenty of fresh produce & Waewae Permaculture are back – with Lian only this week as Fiona will be home with new bubba Arne. Congrat’s, we do love a brand-new Market baby! It’s the last weekend for figs up on the platform. We are allowed to eat & drink again within the Market. And samples are back at some vendors for you to try. We encourage mask use within the Market & it’s heartening to see most people wearing them especially while we are still in the thick of it here so most of us can still get on with our business & keep the wheels running. And for those of you already asking – YES we will be open Easter weekend (yes, next weekend!).
Get any of your winter veg plants into the garden now before the soil gets too cold. Youth Grow, Waikouaiti Gardens & Kakanui have all your favourites. Now is good to plant the brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauli, leeks, garlic, kale, rocket, spinach, silverbeet, etc.
For those of you who are stuck at home we have a few vendors that can deliver to your door, Gilberts Fine Foods, Ettrick Gardens, Waewae, Ronia & Pippi, Agreeable Nature Eggs, Blue Mountain Butchery, Tartan Sari, Dunford Grove, Evansdale Cheese, Oamaru Organics, Harbour Fish, Havoc Pork, Blueskin Bay Honey, Wild Dispensary, Judge Rock Wines, Hazelnut Estate, Matheson & Roberts, Whitestone Cheese, Breads & More, Dunedin Craft Distillery, Waitaki Orchard, Princes St Butchery & others. All their contact details you can find on our website www.otagofarmersmarket.org.nz under vendors.
Bring CASH as some of our vendors are cash only.
Remember your keep cup, return jars & containers to keep the ReUse cycle loop working & bags for vegies & fruit. All of our Ready-to-Eats are more than happy to fill your containers.
Vote for your favourite farmers market & vendor below if you haven’t already to go into the nationwide drawer to find the best in NZ!
Shop your way around Otago this weekend…. at the Market! And please respect everyone’s space. The weather forecast is looking good, AGAIN Take care of each other & thanks for supporting local where you can. And I hope you are doing ok this week.
Ngā mihi

This Week in the kitchen
The weather has taken a turn for the worst this week, so I searched the recipe archives on our website for something to fix the rainy day blues. Figs made their highly anticipated return last week and did not disappoint! Fingers crossed for clear weather on Saturday, I look forward to seeing you all there! - Bella (Assistant Manager)

Waewae Permaculture is back at this weekend's market!
|
Our baby boy, Arne Peter Collings was born on the 25th of March and is happy and robust. We are settling into life with less sleep! Fiona is busy being a proud mum, so you won't see her until spring but Lian will be back at the market this Saturday. After a few weeks away the garden is bursting with spinach, radishes, chard, pakchoi, kohlrabi and carrots to name a few, so expect some crispy fresh autumn produce on our tables.!
Regenerative & Diverse farming, local & agri-chemical free. Organically grown (non-certified-talk to us!). Lian

Willowbrook Orchard
|
The Fruit legacy at Willowbrook Orchard continues to run deep over many generations. In the picture, John's youngest Grandson and son Adam's son Jacob Gilchrist (7) already has a natural interest to work hard and help his Grandad sort fruit.. he loves eating it too 😊 This week John and Pete will have lots of freshly picked varieties of delicious apples to eat fresh or cook at the Market. Good time to make loads of Apple pulp or sauce for Sweet or Savoury purposes. The old adage that "An Apple a day keeps the Doctor away" has a fundamental truth in there. One medium APPLE offers the following: Calories: 104 Carbs: 28 grams Fibre: 5 grams Vitamin C: 10% of the Daily Value (DV) Copper: 6% of the DV Potassium: 5% of the DV Vitamin K: 4% of the DV The same serving also provides 2–5% of the DV for vitamins E, B1, and B6. Vitamin E serves as a fat-soluble antioxidant, vitamin B1 also known as thiamine is needed for growth and development, and vitamin B6 is essential for protein metabolism. Apples are also a rich source of polyphenols, an important group of antioxidants. Antioxidants are compounds that protect your cells from free radicals — harmful molecules that contribute to the development of chronic conditions, like heart disease and cancer. Also this week the delicious juicy Ice Cream pears and late lovely Yellow Peaches 🍏🍎🍐🍑🌞 Enjoy a Fruitful Weekend!
