This Week at the Market

4th July 2020

Hi there

Market Kit 1.jpeg

We have entered into July and we all know what that means, Plastic Free July! The pandemic  has meant our relationship with single use takeaway cups and bags and food wrapped in plastic hiccupped a little but personally I think good hygiene is the key to keeping safe rather than single use anything and layers of plastic.

Fortunately all the vendors at the market are now accepting clean keep cups plus we have our coffee cup library back up and running. The cups are sterilised between use.

Please remember to bring your market kit – containers, bags, produce bags, keep cup, cutlery, and plate for ready to eat foods. Wash your hands and your produce when you get home.

I hope the weather improves for the school holidays. We have the Aquavan coming from the Marine Studies Centre next Saturday 11th July. They have rock pools with live inhabitants that are enormously fascinating for children and adults alike!

See you Saturday

Stay Warm

This Week in the kitchen

Elizabeth Marshall joins us in the Market Kitchen this week.   Elizabeth is a home cook with a creative, fun flair.  She enjoys fermenting, foraging, distilling gin & other wonderful concoctions & playing with colourful, real honest ingredients, all with a healthy bent, which pretty much sums her up!  Stop by the market hub after 8am to say hi....

Apologies, I haven't shown you the last step in Olive Oil "pressing".  This is the decanter, basically a horizontal axis centrifuge.  With the oil having a specific gravity of 0.92 the oil comes to the centre while the water and vegetable matter moves to the outside.

Did you know?  The skin, seed & pulp by-product from the decanter is called pomace.  Straight from the processor it's not much use but after composting, makes an excellent addition to the soil.

Juiced Up are Back!

Freshly squeezed juices, smoothies & goodness can be found back up on the platform as Juiced Up return to the market.  BYO containers, cups or bottles as they are happy to fill them for you.

Locavore Boxes of Market Goodies to Your Door...

locovores 2.jpg

If you can't make it to the Otago Farmers Market on a Saturday morning for whatever reason & you are still keen to support local growers and makers, and here’s a way you can do that:

Locavore Boxes include produce from a number of Farmers Market growers and producers in their boxes: veg from Oamaru Organics, Janefield Hydroponics, Caithness Farm,  Wairuna Organics, bread from Gilbert’s, dairy produce from Holy Cow, Kombucha from Kapowai, eggs from Agreeable Nature, fruit and veg from Rosedale Orchard. They also source from other local producers not found at the market: BL Beekeeping (based on the Taieri), Roastery Door coffee from South Dunedin, Vern Paddock Produce from Mihiwaka.  That means you can still support your local growers, buying locally grown /produced food - with the added bonus of having it delivered to your door! Check their website www.locavoreboxes.co.nz

Janefield Hydroponics are away this week only.

Ronia & Pippi will be away the next two weekends.
