Pumpkin Fever!

13th June

Hi there

Te Mahanga Orchard Wes Reichel.jpg

How I could have missed speaking of the garlic from Te Mahanga in last week’s newsletter I really don’t know!  Along with Wairuna Organics and Rosedale Orchard they have great, tasty garlic and are quite rightly famous for “Wes’s garlic!”

We have had a changing of the guard here at the market. Kara, our wonderful administrator and duty manager is heading home to the states and Michele Driscoll has stepped into a newly created role as Assistant Manager. Michele will be at the market this week learning the ropes.

The team from Wild Dispensary featured in the ODT through the week. If you missed the article take a peek here. Be sure to check out what they have on offer. At this time of year they offer a range of tonics to keep bugs at bay.

See you Saturday

Kapowai's Market Special

Kombucha Bottle 15th June Promo.JPG

~Farmers Market Special - Tamarillo & Wildflower Honey Kombucha~

As you guys know, we like to experiment with interesting flavours for our market special. Most of the time it works but, occasionally, we have a disaster. Tamarillos, as it turns out, are a tricky flavour to work with kombucha. Both are very tart, and it look us a couple of failed attempts before we found a recipe that we loved.

The secret was to balance out the acidity of the tamarillo with some beautiful, raw Wildflower Honey from Blueskin Bay Honey, allowing the tamarillo flavour to impart into the kombucha without being lost in the sour. We also made a tamarillo cordial with the honey, rather than infusing it. Finally, we are happy with the result!  Come and check it out (in bottles and on tap) at the market this weekend.

Our tap options this week are:

Dunford Grove Catch Up

Dunford Grove:

All over for the harvest!  Good yield from the fruit (oil content) but we lost the last tonne to frost on the morning of our planned last day picking.  Now there's a bit of time in racking, blending and off to the lab for certification testing.

We're close to the end of our 2018 gold medal oil but perfecting the new season's oil before we bring it to the market mustn't be rushed.

Did you know?

Extra virgin olive oil does not have more calories than any other common cooking or salad oil. But because of its greater flavour and aroma, you'll probably use less olive oil in cooking than other oils, therefore helping you cut calories even more.
